Awards

We are pleased to announce this year’s graduate and undergraduate award and prize recipients.

UCLA DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD

Congratulations to John Kardosh who was chosen to receive UCLA’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Each year, the award is given to just five teaching assistants on campus and recognizes extraordinary teaching.

YOST PRIZE

The Yost Prize is given annually in honor of Robert M. Yost for excellent performance in teaching. Congratulations to our 2018-19 winners Jae Choe and Ally Peabody Smith.

CARNAP AWARD

The Rudolf and Ina Carnap Prize is given annually in memory of Rudolf and Ina Carnap for excellent philosophical writing by a graduate student. The 2019-20 winner is Kyle Scott for his essay entitled Hannah Arendt on World Alienation.

LOGIC AND LANGUAGE PRIZE

Established to enhance the pre-existing Carnap prize and to honor David Kaplan, the Logic and Language prize recognizes the best essay or polished dissertation chapter on logic, the philosophy of logic, or the philosophy of language. The winner of the 2019-2020 Logic and Language Prize is Ian Boon for his essay Quantification, Content, and Composition.

KALISH PRIZE FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN PHILOSOPHY AWARD

The Kalish Prize for Academic Excellence in Philosophy—named after Don Kalish, a long-term member of the department who especially loved undergraduate teaching and was much beloved by his students (one of whom was David Kaplan)—is the Philosophy Department’s highest honor. Given to an undergraduate major, the Kalish Prize reflects the high esteem the faculty holds for undergraduates and their dedication to philosophy. The 2020 winners are Scott Blomgren, Sophia McMurry, Jiarui Qu, and Shan Vartanian.

GLORIA ROCK AWARD

Honoring Professor Gloria Rock’s membership in the vanguard of gender integration in philosophy and in our department, the Gloria Rock Award is given to an outstanding graduating senior philosophy major from an underrepresented group in philosophy who plans to attend graduate school in philosophy. The 2020 winners are Chelsea Dyapa and Sophia McMurray.
