We are pleased to announce this year’s graduate and undergraduate award and prize recipients.
DEPARTMENTAL DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD
Bestowed by the Philosophy faculty, the award recognizes a graduate student’s career of excellence in teaching. Congratulations to Kim Johnston, Milo Crimi, and Jordan Wallace-Wolf. In different ways, each have inspired students and helped to improve the philosophy department’s strong teaching culture.
UCLA DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD
Congratulations to Jordan Wallace-Wolf who was chosen to receive UCLA’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Each year, the award is given to just five teaching assistants on campus and recognizes extraordinary teaching.
KALISH PRIZE FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN PHILOSOPHY AWARD
The Kalish Prize for Academic Excellence in Philosophy—named after Don Kalish, a long-term member of the department who especially loved undergraduate teaching and was much beloved by his students (one of whom was David Kaplan)—is the philosophy department’s highest honor. Given to an undergraduate major, the Kalish Prize reflects the high esteem the faculty holds for undergraduates and their dedication to philosophy. The 2019 winners are Yohana ( John) Abughattas, Hannah Hsieh, Sean Richardson, and Jiahui Zhou.
GLORIA ROCK AWARD
The newly established prize was created to honor the recently deceased Professor Gloria Rock. Professor Rock completed her dissertation at UCLA in 1976 and was among the first set of women to receive a doctorate in philosophy at UCLA. She spent her career teaching at CSU Fullerton. Honoring Professor Rock’s membership in the vanguard of gender integration in philosophy and in our department, the Gloria Rock Award honors outstanding graduating senior philosophy majors from underrepresented groups in philosophy who plan to attend graduate school in philosophy. The 2019 winners are Yohana ( John) Abughattas and Virginia Foggo.
