Faculty Meeting – 5/12/2023

Motion: To revise the Graduate Manual in the section on incompletes from the current paragraph:

DEPARTMENTAL POLICY REGARDING INCOMPLETE COURSEWORK

It is departmental policy that each academic year “closes,” so to speak, at the end of the third week of August. All work for those incompletes should be submitted by the end of the third week in August. At that point, the Graduate Advisor(s) will be following up with those who hold, and those who have granted, I or NR grades to come to some accommodation: either the period for getting the work done has ceased (this will mean that an I grade will eventually become an F and stay on the student’s record), or some concrete, preferably short-term, plan for getting the remaining work finished will be arranged between the student and the instructor (and with the knowledge of the Graduate Advisor(s)).

to the paragraph as it stood some years go:

DEPARTMENTAL POLICY REGARDING INCOMPLETE COURSEWORK

It is departmental policy that each academic year “closes,” so to speak, at the end of the third week of August. No work for courses taken in the previous academic year can be submitted for a letter grade after this time. Any incomplete grades (I’s) will stand, and will (by University policy) lapse to an F after one quarter. Courses that remain incomplete cannot be used to satisfy the requirements for the Ph.D.
