What’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle?
February 5-6, 2027
Royce Hall 306
Stanley Cavell speaks of “the advent of psychoanalysis as the place, perhaps the last, in which the human psyche as such, the idea that there is a life of the mind, hence a death, receives its proof.” That would put psychoanalysis at the center of philosophical inquiry. Its relative absence is the prompt for this conference. We aim to gather a small group of people invested in the importance of psychoanalytic theory for philosophy to share their insights on both its presence and its absence.
The conference will begin on Friday from 4-6pm with a workshop discussion of Freud’s “Beyond the Pleasure Principle”. On Saturday, there will be four sessions, each consisting of a roughly 45-minute talk and 45-minute Q&A.
Speakers
Béatrice Longuenesse, NYU
Francey Russell, Barnard
Richard Moran, Harvard
David Russell, UCLA
