Meet the Speakers

Tirui Tina Getekian, Paralegal, Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office

I work for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office, which makes me a public defender. I am a part of a defense team that deals with all sorts of criminal charges in Los Angeles, helping to represent clients who cannot otherwise afford attorneys. My favorite part of the job is getting to know the people I work with, specifically, and what I believe is the most important for philosophy majors, is that you get to see how the circumstances people are born into impact the choices that they make later on in life in a most “deterministic” way. My job is a real-life exploration of ethics and free will.

My background in philosophy also manifests through yoga, as I am a practitioner and certified instructor. I do not teach for pay, but there are opportunities to volunteer-teach yoga at jails and prisons, a project I am currently looking into (Yay!). My friends need coping mechanisms for dealing with stress (as do I). And, I write. I get curious, and I explore many different paths, but they said “mini” autobiography…

Holly Gale, Research Librarian, Davis Wright Tremaine

Holly Gale is a Research Librarian at Davis Wright Tremaine. After obtaining her degree in Philosophy in 2003 from UCLA, she went on to complete her Masters in Library and Information Science at University of Washington. She has since worked in academia, law firms and for the judiciary as a Law Librarian. She truly enjoys being a librarian and the opportunities for growth, constant learning, and the work life balance it has provided.

Conner O’Brien, Organized Crime Unit Intern, Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, & LSAT Tutor

Conner O’Brien earned his Bachelor’s Degree in philosophy from UCLA in 2021 after successfully transferring from Los Angeles Pierce College. Conner received the UCLA Philosophy Department’s Kalish Prize and then accepted the department’s role of Section Leader for the following school year. The following year Conner began working at the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office first in the healthcare fraud unit, then organized crime. Since receiving a 177 on the LSAT, he has been tutoring for the LSAT part-time. He has also been accepted to many law schools for the fall of 2023 including Stanford, Georgetown, and UCLA Law.
