Joseph Vaughan Headshot
Joseph Vaughan, CIO/VP of Computing and Information Services, Harvey Mudd College

Joseph Vaughan has been CIO and Vice President of Harvey Mudd College since February 2008. Prior to that, he was Director of the UCLA Center for Digital Humanities and Humanities Division CIO (2001-2008). Between 1994 and 2001 he managed multiple Humanities departments at UCLA and before that he owned and ran an English school in Madrid, Spain. He holds a B.A. (1985) in Philosophy and Psychology from Trinity College, Dublin and M.A. (1987) and C.Phil (1992) in Philosophy from UCLA. He has had a very varied career, although the unifying thread is that he has always been involved in education of some form. Information Technology turned out to be the place where the intersection of what talents he has and the world around him produced a decent mix of opportunities to support and foster the educational missions of several different institutions. He is fascinated by organizational change and the challenges of bringing long lasting change to an organization. In that realm, he has carried out two “turn arounds” of IT departments that were struggling and perceived as not providing needed services. Even more than working at Harvey Mudd, he likes hanging out with his wife Susan (UCLA Art History Ph.D. 2008) and their three children Fish (19), Rowan (17) and Milo (15). And whenever there’s time left from all that, he crews on racing sailboats. Recently, he’s also gotten into woodworking with hand tools.
