Meet the Speakers

Ally Peabody Smith, PhD

Postdoctoral Researcher, David Geffen School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, UCLA

Ally Peabody Smith is a postdoctoral researcher at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, where she works with The Feinsinger Lab on topics pertaining to human subjects research in neuroscience. Her independent research encompasses philosophy of disability, ethics, and philosophy of science. Current projects include a book manuscript, “Love without Language”, which proposes a novel, extensionally adequate grounds for moral status; a qualitative project on non-linguistic means of communication deployed between non-speaking persons and their intimates; proposals on the value of philosophical methodologies in emerging precision healthcare frameworks; and an ongoing analysis of how virtue ethical frameworks might improve deficiencies of goodwill in medicine, which currently involves the development of a pilot medical school ethics curriculum. Beginning in August 2024, she will be an Assistant Professor at Lehigh University’s College of Health.

Branden Bio, PhD

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate at the Naval Research Laboratory

Branden Bio is a third year postdoc currently looking at industry research scientist or data scientist roles for his next position. He completed his PhD in 2021 at Princeton where he studied cognitive psychology and neuroscience. At UCLA he double majored in philosophy and psychology, especially appreciating the areas where they overlapped. His work explores the scientific side of philosophy of mind, including but not limited to consciousness, perceiving other minds, and epistemic reasoning. He currently lives in Washington, DC which he enjoys but he misses the boba and mexican food from LA.

Lindsey d’Arnaud, MD

Resident Physician, Psychiatry,

Dr. d’Arnaud was born and raised in Long Beach, CA. She attended Los Alamitos High, then completed her freshman year at Long Beach City College before transferring to UCLA her sophomore year, where she majored in philosophy. She earned her medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine, where she is currently completing her residency in psychiatry.
