SUMMARY:"Public Kindnesses and Valuing Persons as Persons" - Cheshire Calhoun (Arizona State University)
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 30\, 2026\n4:00 – 6:00 PM\nDodd Hall 175\nRSVP HERE\n  \nJoin us on Friday\, October 30\, 2026\, for a colloquium with Cheshire Calhoun\, Arizona State University. The talk will take place from 4:00 – 6:00 PM with a reception to follow. \n  \nPublic Kindnesses and Valuing Persons as Persons\n  \nThere’s an upsurge in cultural attention to kindnesses to strangers and mere acquaintances. Are there reasons other than\, or in addition to\, the reasons favoring general beneficence and personal relationship kindnesses\, that face-to-face kindnesses to strangers and acquaintances matter? I explore their connection with valuing\, treating\, and attitudinally recognizing persons as persons. Rather than taking “valuing persons as persons” to be an exclusively moral notion\, I suggest that to value persons as persons is to value them under three distinct descriptors: as bearers of moral personhood\, as irreplaceable individuals who are the particular persons they are\, and as individuals with whom we are in society. The first two notions are familiar from the literature on recognition-respect and on personal love. I introduce the last to illuminate the way everyday\, mundane social interactions between strangers and acquaintances communicate a distinctive form of recognizing our value as persons; I suggest that the companion valuing attitude is friendly non-indifference; I conclude with some comments on greetings and chattings. \n  \nCheshire Calhoun is Professor of Philosophy Emerit at Arizona State University. She works in normative ethics and moral psychology. Her most recent books are A Social Practice Account of Responsible Persons (Open Press TIU) and Doing Valuable Time: The Present\, the Future\, and Meaningful Living (OUP). She is series editor for Oxford University Press’s Studies in Feminist Philosophy and co-editor of a new Oxford series on Positive Moral Philosophy. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Science in 2020. \n  \n  \nJoin our mailing list!\nSign up for our mailing list to stay up-to-date with future UCLA Philosophy events\, conferences\, and colloquia! \nSIGN UP HERE

SUMMARY:Biological Naturalism about Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the “Biological Naturalism about Consciousness\,” a conference at UCLA from Thursday-Friday\, November 5-6\, 2026 in Royce Hall 306. \n  \nRSVP HERE\n  \nAbout the conference\nCan non-biological systems be conscious? If not\, why not? These questions have taken on new weight as AI systems become increasingly sophisticated\, not least because our answers bear on which entities might matter morally. \n  \nThis conference focuses on biological naturalism: the family of views holding that certain biological properties are required for consciousness. Biological naturalism is often positioned as the principal alternative to functionalism. But compared to its rival\, biological naturalism remains underdeveloped as a positive research program—its central commitments are still being clarified\, its empirical predictions are still being articulated\, and the range of strategies for defending it are only now being explored systematically. (For discussion\, see this survey.) \n  \nOur aim is to bring together researchers who want to make progress toward developing a positive version of biological naturalism. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nPeter Godfrey-Smith (University of Sydney)\nNed Block (NYU)\nRosa Cao (Stanford)\nJonathan Birch (LSE)\nMatthias Michel (MIT)\nChristian de Weerd (Cambridge)\nEric Schwitzgebel (UC Riverside) & Jeremy Pober (University of Antwerp)\nCarolyn Dicey Jennings (UC Merced)\nJake Spinella (UIC)\nDaria Zakharova (LSE)\nDerek Shiller (Eleos)\n\n  \nOrganizers: Josh Armstrong (UCLA)\, Hayley Clatterbuck (UCLA and Rethink Priorities)\, and Bob Fischer (Texas State University and Rethink Priorities) \n  \nWorkshop Program\n  \nThursday\, November 5\n9:00 – 10:00: Jonathan Birch\, “What can brain emulations tell us about consciousness?” \n10:15 – 11:15: Jeremy Pober and Eric Schwitzgebel\, “Substrate Flexibility\, Copernicanism\, and Biological Naturalism” \n11:30 – 12:30: Matthias Michel\, “A Bayesian Argument for Computational Functionalism” \n12:30 – 1:30: Lunch \n1:30 – 2:30: Ned Block\, “The Rise of the AI Zombies” \n2:45 – 3:45: Rosa Cao\, TBD \n4:00 – 5:00: Christian de Weerd\, “Does consciousness require biology? An explanationist perspective” \n  \nFriday\, November 6\n9:00 – 10:00: Daria Zakharova\, “The self-model function of biological agency” \n10:15 – 11:15: Peter Godfrey-Smith\, “Biological Naturalism and Biological Chauvinism” \n11:30 – 12:30: Derek Shiller\, “Word and (Biological) Consciousness” \n12:30 – 2:00: Lunch \n2:00 – 3:00: Carolyn Dicey Jennings\, “Relationalism as a Theory of Biological Consciousness” \n3:15 – 4:15: Jake Spinella\, “Grounding\, Functionalism\, and Biological Naturalism” \n  \nRSVP HERE\n  \n  \nJoin our mailing list!\nSign up for our mailing list to stay up-to-date with future UCLA Philosophy events\, conferences\, and colloquia! \nSIGN UP HERE

SUMMARY:What's Beyond the Pleasure Principle?
DESCRIPTION:February 5-6\, 2027\nRoyce Hall 306\n  \nStanley Cavell speaks of “the advent of psychoanalysis as the place\, perhaps the last\, in which the human psyche as such\, the idea that there is a life of the mind\, hence a death\, receives its proof.” That would put psychoanalysis at the center of philosophical inquiry. Its relative absence is the prompt for this conference. We aim to gather a small group of people invested in the importance of psychoanalytic theory for philosophy to share their insights on both its presence and its absence. \n  \nThe conference will begin on Friday from 4-6pm with a workshop discussion of Freud’s “Beyond the Pleasure Principle”. On Saturday\, there will be four sessions\, each consisting of a roughly 45-minute talk and 45-minute Q&A. \n\n  \nSpeakers\nBéatrice Longuenesse\, NYU \nFrancey Russell\, Barnard \nRichard Moran\, Harvard \nDavid Russell\, UCLA \n  \nJoin our mailing list!\nSign up for our mailing list to stay up-to-date with future UCLA Philosophy events\, conferences\, and colloquia! \nSIGN UP HERE
